Hailing from the tightly knit musical community of Austin, Texas, award-winning singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster has found herself duetting with Bonnie Raitt, standing on stage with the Allman Brothers at New York’s Beacon Theater, and trading verses with Sudan Tedeschi. Drawing influence from legendary acts like Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin, Ruthie developed a unique sound unable to be contained within a single genre, with some describing it as “some folk, some blues, some soul, some rock, some gospel”. Ruthie has been nominated for four Grammys, and has won multiple Blues Music and Austin Music Awards, plus the Grand Prix du Disque from Academie Charles-Cros in france.

Jon Cleary’s love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural British village of Cranbrook, Kent, where he was raised in a musical family. In 1981 Cleary flew to New Orleans and took a cab straight from the airport to the Maple Leaf Bar, where he soon graduated to playing piano. As word of Cleary’s burgeoning talent spread, he was hired by New Orleans R&B legends Snooks Eaglin, Earl “Trick Bag” King, Johnny Adams, and Jessie “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” Hill, while also gaining the respect of the great pianists Dr. John and Allen Toussaint. Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B, gospel music, funk, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms, and much more.

OTTMAR LIEBERT & LUNA NEGRA

Ottmar Liebert has said that “flamenco is a music both romantic and dangerous; it is an attitude as much as it is a musical genre.” The guitarist is renowned for harnessing the emotional fire and mournful tonalities of traditional flamenco music, updating it with the subtle rhythms of jazz, and making it widely accessible with the melodic song structures of pop. But even the cleverest formulas are worthless without the animating spark of genius – a quality for which there is no formula, only serendipity. Liebert, together with Luna Negra, provides that spark.

Straight out of Havana, Cuba comes a blazing ensemble of deeply soulful mambo reminiscent of Benny Moré, Pérez Prado, and banda gigante of the 1940’s and 50’s.  The album boasts all original songs recorded at the historic state-run Estudios Areito with Cuba’s finest players, young and old, led by the inimitable and dynamic singer José “Pepito” Gómez, produced by Chulo Records’ Jacob Plasse, with incendiary arrangements by Michael Eckroth. The ferocious and pedigreed wind and rhythm sections consist of musicians from storied groups including Irakere, NG La Banda, and Los Van Van. Robust, time-tested musical architectures of son cubano and mambo are honored and modernized through a synthesis of the rich compositional styles of Havana, New York, and beyond.
