SUMMARY:OTTMAR LIEBERT & LUNA NEGRA
DESCRIPTION:View artist website \nOttmar Liebert has said that “flamenco is a music both romantic and dangerous; it is an attitude as much as it is a musical genre.” The guitarist is renowned for harnessing the emotional fire and mournful tonalities of traditional flamenco music\, updating it with the subtle rhythms of jazz\, and making it widely accessible with the melodic song structures of pop. But even the cleverest formulas are worthless without the animating spark of genius – a quality for which there is no formula\, only serendipity. Liebert\, together with Luna Negra\, provides that spark.

SUMMARY:JON CLEARY and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen
DESCRIPTION:View artist website \nJon Cleary’s love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural British village of Cranbrook\, Kent\, where he was raised in a musical family. In 1981 Cleary flew to New Orleans and took a cab straight from the airport to the Maple Leaf Bar\, where he soon graduated to playing piano. As word of Cleary’s burgeoning talent spread\, he was hired by New Orleans R&B legends Snooks Eaglin\, Earl “Trick Bag” King\, Johnny Adams\, and Jessie “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” Hill\, while also gaining the respect of the great pianists Dr. John and Allen Toussaint. Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B\, gospel music\, funk\, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms\, and much more.

SUMMARY:STEEP CANYON RANGERS
DESCRIPTION:With Out in the Open\, Steep Canyon Rangers affirm their place as one of the most versatile bands in contemporary American music. The Grammy Award-winning sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic\, wedding it to elements of pop\, country\, and folk rock to create something original. Out in the Open is the Rangers’ bravest excursion thus far\, transcending bluegrass while also getting closest to the genre’s true form thanks to 3x Grammy Award-winning producer Joe Henry’s traditional approach toward recording.

SUMMARY:TIM FAIN & SIMONE DINNERSTEIN
DESCRIPTION:Virtuoso musicians\, violinist Tim Fain and pianist Simone Dinnerstein thrilled concertgoers at Bitterroot Performing Arts Council just a couple of seasons ago. Now the talented pair returns\, in an electrifying program called Patterns in Time\, which explores the many ways that composers use nonlinear time.  With circling repetitions and obsessive phrases and chord progressions\, this music draws from both old and new sources. With Dinnerstein’s “personality\, verve\, and thoughtfulness” and Fain’s “sheer youthful exuberance and dazzling technical skill” (Washington Post)\, the perception of time will cease as audiences are absorbed in their sound world. \nView Tim’s website | View Simone’s website

SUMMARY:THE HOT SARDINES
DESCRIPTION:Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul\, The Hot Sardines are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world. \nIn the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble\, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements\, rollicking piano melodies\, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice. On French Fries & Champagne\, The Hot Sardines’ new album for Universal Music Classics\, the jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette\, combining covers and originals as they effortlessly channel New York speakeasies\, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans jazz halls.

SUMMARY:RITA COOLIDGE
DESCRIPTION:After ten years during which she bore witness to some of her life’s greatest joys and deepest sorrows\, Rita Coolidge is back with Safe in the Arms of Time\, her 18th solo album and a reaffirmation of her indomitable spirit and unquenchable creative thirst. \nSafe in the Arms of Time is colored by Rita’s pivotal role in the Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene of the 1970s\, where she made her bones as a top backup singer—that’s Rita on the refrains of Stephen Stills’s “Love the One You’re With” and Eric Clapton’s “After Midnight”—before embarking on a platinum-selling solo career.\nIn her career comprising five decades and millions of record sales\, Rita captivated audiences with her signature hits “We’re All Alone\,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do\,” “All Time High” and “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.”

SUMMARY:KAHULANUI
DESCRIPTION:There is a new wave coming from Hawaii\, a blend of traditional music and the Big Band Swing brought to the Aloha State by U.S. servicemen during World War II. Its leading exponent is Kahulanui\, a nine-piece band: four horns plus guitar\, bass\, ukulele\, drums and steel\, whose energy and dynamic arrangements have caused a sensation throughout the Islands and the Mainland. Their debut CD\, Hula Ku’I\, was nominated for a 2014 Grammy Award in the Regional Roots category. Kahulanui is bringing their unique style to delighted audiences across America.

SUMMARY:JUDY COLLINS
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album\, Wildflowers\, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns\,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music\, won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits gold- and platinum-selling albums. Recently\, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright\, Shawn Colvin\, Dolly Parton\, Joan Baez\, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins.

SUMMARY:SMUIN BALLET
DESCRIPTION:Smuin pushes the boundaries of contemporary ballet within a distinctly American style\, combining classical ballet training\, technique\, and artistry with uncommon physicality and expression. Smuin offers audiences an experience of ballet that is entertaining\, evocative\, and original. \nDebuting in San Francisco in 1994\, Smuin immediately established itself as one of the Bay Area’s most eagerly watched performing arts companies of international acclaim\, performing to sold-out houses on U.S. and European tours. Michael Smuin (a native Missoula “son” tragically passed away in 2007) had a singular philosophy\, to create pieces merging the diverse vocabularies of classical ballet and contemporary dance\, which has served as the Company’s touchstone since its inception.

SUMMARY:ELVIN BISHOP & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE
DESCRIPTION:Elvin Bishop is on a roll! Besides being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015\, he also won a Blues Music Award for Album of The Year and Band of The Year\, and his classic rock song Fooled Around & Fell in Love appeared in the hit film Guardians of The Galaxy\, as well as the film’s platinum selling soundtrack. \nFive decades of nonstop touring\, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters\, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s. Thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other.

SUMMARY:A. J. CROCE
DESCRIPTION:A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by his name. He’s experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two\, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel\, creativity\, and endorsement throughout his long career. It’s curious that it now feels necessary to include the reference\, as enough time has passed that a new generation of tastemakers and journalists might not know who Jim Croce was — that he was a golden-voiced everyman\, a singer- songwriter-guitarist who died too soon\, leaving one of pop music’s most beautiful and memorable ballads (written about a young A.J.) in his wake.
