SUMMARY:Suzy Bogguss
DESCRIPTION:[vc_video link=’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_-Youcc0g4′] \nDuring the creative explosion that was country music in the 1990s\, Suzy Bogguss sold 4 million records with sparkling radio hits like “Outbound Plane\,” “Someday Soon\,” “Letting Go\,” “Drive South\,” and “Hey Cinderella.” But you can’t peg Suzy that easily. \nIn the midst of her country popularity\, she took time off to make an album of duets with the legendary Chet Atkins. In 2003 she made an album of modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel. An album of original music in 2007 landed Suzy at number 4 on the jazz charts. Her folk music roots showed through in her frequent appearances on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion\, in the Grammy she earned for her work on Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster\, and in her critically acclaimed album and book project from 2011\, American Folk Songbook. In 2014\, she released Lucky\, a collection of songs written by Merle Haggard and interpreted through Suzy’s crystal vocals from the female point of view. Her latest offering\, Aces Redux\, is a re-recording of her platinum selling album Aces\, produced by Suzy with fresh arrangements and her signature sparkling vocals. She continues to tour the world\, on her own and with fellow country radio divas Terri Clark and Pam Tills as “Chicks With Hits.” \nSo yes\, you can call her a country singer if you want\, but really that’s just the beginning. \n  \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:SARA GAZAREK
DESCRIPTION:Graced with an “impeccable” voice (Winnipeg Free Press)\, Sara Gazarek has been one of the leading lights of an impressive generation of jazz vocalists since her brilliant emergence at age 20. Gazarek’s experience began in the overcast light of Seattle\, where she was originally drawn to musical theater and dance but fell in love with the jazz choir during high school. She went on to study at the University of Southern California\, where she’s now been a member of the faculty for 8 years. While her subsequent career has been the picture of success – highlighted by five acclaimed albums\, an ardent fanbase\, enthusiastic reviews\, a teaching position at the University of Southern California\, and collaborations with such luminaries as Kurt Elling\, Fred Hersch\, Billy Childs\, and Larry Goldings – it is with her latest double GRAMMY® nominated album\, Thirsty Ghost\, that Gazarek finally brings her musical expression stunningly into phase with her emotional maturity. Prompted by an intense period of personal and professional upheaval\, the “exquisite taste\, bright wit and creative vitality” hailed by WNPR remain\, but those qualities are potently shaded by a rich undercurrent of complex feeling and whole-hearted realities. \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Lúnasa
DESCRIPTION:Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh\, Lúnasa was formed in 1997 from members of some of the greatest Irish groups of the previous decade. An early review from Folk Roots magazine described the band as an “Irish music dream team”. From the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. Having since sold over a quarter of a million records and performed over 2\,000 shows across 36 countries\, Lúnasa has won multiple awards and become one of the most influential bands in the history of traditional music. Collaborations with singers Natalie Merchant\, Mary-Chapin Carpenter\, and Tim O’Brien and high-profile concerts at The Hollywood Bowl\, New York’s Carnegie Hall\, Glastonbury Festival and Bercy Arena Paris have helped broaden the band’s audience and cement its place at the forefront of contemporary Irish music. \n  \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:The Suffers
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2011\, The Suffers built a devoted local following in Houston before breaking out internationally with their 2015 debut EP\, Make Some Room\, which helped land them performances everywhere from Letterman to NPR’s Tiny Desk. The band followed it up in 2016 with a self-titled full-length album that yielded similar acclaim\, along with star-making performances at the Newport Folk Festival and on The Daily Show. By the time the group released their 2018 sophomore effort\, Everything Here\, their arrival as critical and festival favorites was undeniable\, with NPR praising the “multidimensional\, multicultural possibilities of their take on soul\,” and The Guardian hailing their “adventurous” blend of 70s R&B\, disco\, jazz\, and contemporary gospel. Rolling Stone proclaimed it “an inspired vision of roots music.” \n  \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Naturally 7
DESCRIPTION:“A capella group” so vastly underplays what Naturally 7 creates onstage that they had to coin a phrase – “Vocal Play” – to more accurately depict what they do. Naturally 7 is more than a tightly orchestrated collection of great singers. They transform their voices into actual human instruments\, effortlessly producing music of any genre. Their vocal choreography is so perfectly interwoven that they compelled the musical maestro himself\, Quincy Jones\, to declare that “Naturally 7 is the future of vocal music!!” Their sonic mastery was on full display in a series of unforgettable performances on “The World’s Best” TV show\, which premiered on CBS immediately following Super Bowl LIII. Hosted by James Corden\, Naturally 7 reigned supreme as the world’s “Best Group”\, and cemented their singular status among the planet’s musical elite. For the members of Naturally 7 – “Ricky“ Lee Ricardo Cort\, Rod Eldridge\, Kelvin “Kelz“ Mitchell\, Sean Simmonds\, Dwight Stewart\, Roger Thomas\, and Warren Thomas – it’s a privilege to do what they love and bring so much joy to the hearts of their fans each and every performance. It’s exactly what you would expect. When something is pure magic it’s destined to withstand the test of time. Naturally… \n  \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:ORQUESTA AKOKÁN
DESCRIPTION:View artist website \nStraight out of Havana\, Cuba comes a blazing ensemble of deeply soulful mambo reminiscent of Benny Moré\, Pérez Prado\, and banda gigante of the 1940’s and 50’s.  The album boasts all original songs recorded at the historic state-run Estudios Areito with Cuba’s finest players\, young and old\, led by the inimitable and dynamic singer José “Pepito” Gómez\, produced by Chulo Records’ Jacob Plasse\, with incendiary arrangements by Michael Eckroth. The ferocious and pedigreed wind and rhythm sections consist of musicians from storied groups including Irakere\, NG La Banda\, and Los Van Van. Robust\, time-tested musical architectures of son cubano and mambo are honored and modernized through a synthesis of the rich compositional styles of Havana\, New York\, and beyond.

SUMMARY:OTTMAR LIEBERT & LUNA NEGRA
DESCRIPTION:View artist website \nOttmar Liebert has said that “flamenco is a music both romantic and dangerous; it is an attitude as much as it is a musical genre.” The guitarist is renowned for harnessing the emotional fire and mournful tonalities of traditional flamenco music\, updating it with the subtle rhythms of jazz\, and making it widely accessible with the melodic song structures of pop. But even the cleverest formulas are worthless without the animating spark of genius – a quality for which there is no formula\, only serendipity. Liebert\, together with Luna Negra\, provides that spark.

SUMMARY:JON CLEARY and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen
DESCRIPTION:View artist website \nJon Cleary’s love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural British village of Cranbrook\, Kent\, where he was raised in a musical family. In 1981 Cleary flew to New Orleans and took a cab straight from the airport to the Maple Leaf Bar\, where he soon graduated to playing piano. As word of Cleary’s burgeoning talent spread\, he was hired by New Orleans R&B legends Snooks Eaglin\, Earl “Trick Bag” King\, Johnny Adams\, and Jessie “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” Hill\, while also gaining the respect of the great pianists Dr. John and Allen Toussaint. Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B\, gospel music\, funk\, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms\, and much more.

SUMMARY:STEEP CANYON RANGERS
DESCRIPTION:With Out in the Open\, Steep Canyon Rangers affirm their place as one of the most versatile bands in contemporary American music. The Grammy Award-winning sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic\, wedding it to elements of pop\, country\, and folk rock to create something original. Out in the Open is the Rangers’ bravest excursion thus far\, transcending bluegrass while also getting closest to the genre’s true form thanks to 3x Grammy Award-winning producer Joe Henry’s traditional approach toward recording.

SUMMARY:TIM FAIN & SIMONE DINNERSTEIN
DESCRIPTION:Virtuoso musicians\, violinist Tim Fain and pianist Simone Dinnerstein thrilled concertgoers at Bitterroot Performing Arts Council just a couple of seasons ago. Now the talented pair returns\, in an electrifying program called Patterns in Time\, which explores the many ways that composers use nonlinear time.  With circling repetitions and obsessive phrases and chord progressions\, this music draws from both old and new sources. With Dinnerstein’s “personality\, verve\, and thoughtfulness” and Fain’s “sheer youthful exuberance and dazzling technical skill” (Washington Post)\, the perception of time will cease as audiences are absorbed in their sound world. \nView Tim’s website | View Simone’s website

DESCRIPTION:Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul\, The Hot Sardines are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world. \nIn the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble\, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements\, rollicking piano melodies\, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice. On French Fries & Champagne\, The Hot Sardines’ new album for Universal Music Classics\, the jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette\, combining covers and originals as they effortlessly channel New York speakeasies\, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans jazz halls.

SUMMARY:RITA COOLIDGE
DESCRIPTION:After ten years during which she bore witness to some of her life’s greatest joys and deepest sorrows\, Rita Coolidge is back with Safe in the Arms of Time\, her 18th solo album and a reaffirmation of her indomitable spirit and unquenchable creative thirst. \nSafe in the Arms of Time is colored by Rita’s pivotal role in the Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene of the 1970s\, where she made her bones as a top backup singer—that’s Rita on the refrains of Stephen Stills’s “Love the One You’re With” and Eric Clapton’s “After Midnight”—before embarking on a platinum-selling solo career.\nIn her career comprising five decades and millions of record sales\, Rita captivated audiences with her signature hits “We’re All Alone\,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do\,” “All Time High” and “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher.”

SUMMARY:SMUIN BALLET
DESCRIPTION:Smuin pushes the boundaries of contemporary ballet within a distinctly American style\, combining classical ballet training\, technique\, and artistry with uncommon physicality and expression. Smuin offers audiences an experience of ballet that is entertaining\, evocative\, and original. \nDebuting in San Francisco in 1994\, Smuin immediately established itself as one of the Bay Area’s most eagerly watched performing arts companies of international acclaim\, performing to sold-out houses on U.S. and European tours. Michael Smuin (a native Missoula “son” tragically passed away in 2007) had a singular philosophy\, to create pieces merging the diverse vocabularies of classical ballet and contemporary dance\, which has served as the Company’s touchstone since its inception.

SUMMARY:ELVIN BISHOP & CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE
DESCRIPTION:Elvin Bishop is on a roll! Besides being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015\, he also won a Blues Music Award for Album of The Year and Band of The Year\, and his classic rock song Fooled Around & Fell in Love appeared in the hit film Guardians of The Galaxy\, as well as the film’s platinum selling soundtrack. \nFive decades of nonstop touring\, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters\, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s. Thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other.
